Our story

Genesis

In 1991, the Islamic Academy of Education, a not-for-profit trust committed to the upliftment of minorities in general and Muslims in particular, was established by entrepreneur Mr. Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi as its Chairman.

The trustees perceived a hiatus in health professional education and decided to start a dental college. Yenepoya Dental College was granted permission in 1992. It was followed by the Yenepoya Institute of Nursing Sciences in 1994, Yenepoya Medical College in 1999, Yenepoya Nursing College in 2002 and Yenepoya Physiotherapy College in 2003. These colleges offer graduate, postgraduate, Ph.D. and certification programmes.

From its inception, the management pursued quality higher education by appointing accomplished professionals and creating a healthy campus with natural surroundings and purpose-built learning environments in the suburbs of Mangalore.

In 2007, the Islamic Academy of Education sponsored the formation of a new trust with the sole purpose of creating a Deemed-to-be University. In recognition of the institutions’ service, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, granted Yenepoya University Trust Deemed-to-be University status under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 in 2008.

The University campus at Nithyananda Nagar, Deralakatte includes modern classrooms, science laboratories, staff residences and separate lodging facilities for boys and girls.

The foundation

Sponsoring Society

The Islamic Academy of Education was established in 1991 as a not-for-profit trust committed to the upliftment of minorities, under the chairmanship of entrepreneur Mr. Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi. Responding to a need in health professional education, the Trust established Yenepoya Dental College in 1992 and subsequently expanded into nursing, medicine and physiotherapy education.

From the outset, the management aspired to provide quality education through highly qualified teachers and thoughtfully designed learning environments amid the natural surroundings of Mangalore.

In its pursuit of excellence in professional education, the Academy sponsored a separate trust in 2007 to create a Deemed-to-be University. The recognition granted in 2008 opened a new chapter in the history of Yenepoya Institutions.

Meaning and identity

Emblem

The Yenepoya University emblem reflects the rich ideals and core values upon which its foundations have been built. The colours of the shield salute three key facets of the University—the mentor, the materials and the medium through which growth takes place.

Green embodies life and the giver thereof, and represents paradise as the ultimate destination for knowledge seekers. Blue symbolises protection, scholastic achievement and institutional success. Grey represents stability, dependability, guiding principles and discipline.

The shield, symbolic of a reputed seat of learning, carries the University’s motto on the ribbon below.

“Rabbi Zidni ‘Ilma” — “Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
